Federal lawsuits alleging that Roblox’s design enabled adult predators to contact and groom children were consolidated in December 2025 into MDL 3166, In re: Roblox Corporation Child Sexual Exploitation and Assault Litigation, before Chief Judge Richard Seeborg in the Northern District of California. As of October 1, 2026, 180 cases are pending , with new cases filed weekly; the litigation is in active discovery, and no ruling has issued on the platforms’ threshold defenses. Families from Hawaii are among the plaintiffs in the filed cases. No court has found Roblox or any other platform liable in these cases, and there is no settlement of families’ individual claims. The federal litigation is in its early stages, and every family’s case depends on its own facts.

What the filed cases allege

The complaints allege that platform features — open chat with strangers, giftable in-game currency, and limited age screening — made it possible for adults to reach children inside games and move contact to less-moderated platforms. The JPML’s transfer order names Roblox Corporation, Discord Inc., Snap Inc., and Meta Platforms, Inc. Roblox and the other platforms dispute the allegations, and the claims remain unproven.

What’s happening in Hawaii

No Hawaii attorney general enforcement action against Roblox had been announced as of October 2026, but at least ten other states have sued and four have settled — and the federal MDL is open to families from every state. Member cases in MDL 3166 are predominantly filed directly in the Northern District of California regardless of a family’s home state, so no public count of Hawaii families exists — direct filing is the standard path.

What Hawaii law provides on deadlines

In Hawaii, claims arising from child sexual abuse are governed as follows: A civil action against the person who committed the child sexual abuse must be brought within eight years after the victim’s eighteenth birthday, or within three years of discovery of the causal injury. The statute provides: “shall be commenced against the person who committed the act of sexual abuse more than: (1) Eight years after the eighteenth birthday” (Haw. Rev. Stat. § 657-1.8(a)(1)). Verified against the official statutory text on August 16, 2026. On revival or lookback windows: Hawaii’s revival window is closed — § 657-1.8(b) opened an eight-year window from April 24, 2012 that expired April 24, 2020, and no window is open today. Separately, the deadline rules courts apply to claims against the platforms themselves are contested and may differ from the abuse-claim rules — the characterization of such claims is an open legal question. Whether any individual has a timely claim depends on their circumstances and the law of their state; an attorney licensed in Hawaii can evaluate whether a claim is timely.

How the litigation is progressing

The MDL court entered evidence-preservation orders in August 2026, approved an expert-discovery framework, and is managing bellwether proceedings on the platforms’ arbitration defenses. Since August 2025, at least ten state attorneys general have brought suits over child-safety practices, and four states reached regulatory settlements in 2026. Four states — Nevada, Alabama, West Virginia, and South Dakota — reached settlements with Roblox in 2026 resolving those states’ regulatory claims. Those settlements do not resolve, and do not pay, families’ individual lawsuits. Iowa’s state case is set for trial on November 8, 2027.

Resources for Hawaii parents

Parents researching what happened in a child’s account can consult the platforms’ own data-request processes, the NCMEC CyberTipline (report.cybertip.org) for reporting, and local law enforcement — reporting to authorities does not require an attorney. Hawaii’s Internet Crimes Against Children task force — Hawaii ICAC Task Force, hosted by Hawaii Department of the Attorney General — https://ag.hawaii.gov/hicac — investigates online exploitation of children and accepts tips. Frequently Asked Questions

Who is included in the filed cases?
The pending complaints were brought by parents and guardians of minors who were allegedly contacted and exploited through the platforms, filed under Doe designations. Whether any particular family’s circumstances fit the litigation is determined by attorney review, not by any general description.
What deadlines apply to Hawaii families?
Hawaii’s abuse-claim rules are summarized above; deadlines for claims against the platforms are a contested legal question and may differ. An attorney licensed in Hawaii can evaluate whether a claim is timely.
Is there a class action to join?
No. The federal cases are individual lawsuits coordinated in an MDL for pretrial purposes; there is nothing to “join” in the class-action sense.
Where is the litigation happening?
Pretrial proceedings are centralized in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. State attorneys general have also filed separate enforcement actions in their own courts.
Has Roblox changed anything?
Roblox announced age verification for all accounts beginning May 1, 2026 and tiered accounts by age group, while disputing the lawsuits’ allegations. No court has found Roblox liable.
Where can reports be made?
The NCMEC CyberTipline (report.cybertip.org) and local law enforcement accept reports directly from parents and guardians.
