Marin & Murphy Law Firm · Confidential · Stop messages anytime

If you have just found something in your child’s account, do three things in this order: preserve (screenshot everything full-screen with usernames and timestamps; delete nothing — not the app, not the account, not a single message), do not confront (no message to the person, no comment, no block yet — confrontation tips them to delete evidence and disappear), and report (the NCMEC CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org and your local police, today; reporting neither requires nor waits on a lawyer). Everything else — including whether your family has a legal claim — comes after those three, and none of it has to happen tonight.

First: your child, not the case

Before any screenshot, check on your child. Two sentences matter more than everything else on this page: nothing is their fault, and nobody is in trouble. Groomers rely on shame and secrecy; removing both at home is the most protective act available to you. If your child is in distress or has talked about self-harm, stop here: call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), involve their doctor or therapist, and let everything else wait. If there is any suggestion of ongoing contact or a planned meeting, call the police now — that is an emergency, not a documentation exercise.

Preserve, specifically

Capture the conversations completely (top to bottom, usernames and timestamps visible), the friends list, the transaction history, and anything on other apps the contact moved to. Save to two places. Keep the device as it is: no factory reset, no trade-in, no “cleaning it up,” no deleting the account — the account and device are the record. If you encounter explicit images of your child: do not copy, forward, or send them to anyone, including us — preserve the device and tell law enforcement where the material is. There are strict laws about that material, and the safe path is hands off, device preserved, authorities informed.

Don’t confront — and what that includes

It includes messaging the person, replying “I’m their parent,” posting about them, having a relative message them, and blocking them impulsively. Every one of those tells them to delete their side of the record. If ongoing safety requires cutting contact immediately, do it with law enforcement’s guidance — safety always outranks evidence.

Report, in two places

The CyberTipline (report.cybertip.org) routes reports to the right agencies and to the platforms; your local police department opens the door to an actual investigation and, where a child is at risk, immediate action. Bring your screenshots to both. Neither report costs anything, and neither requires an attorney.

Then, when you’re ready

The platforms’ own records — including the other account’s identity — can be reached through litigation, and screening for the pending Roblox cases is built for exactly the situation you have just documented. The review is confidential, answered by you, never by your child, and there is no fee unless there is a recovery. It can wait until tomorrow. Your child’s evening should not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Police or lawyer first?
Police and the CyberTipline. A child’s safety and a criminal referral never wait on a civil claim. The legal review can come the same week — second.
Should I take the device away?
Preserve it rather than punish with it. Removing a device abruptly can read as blame and push a frightened child toward secrecy. Secure it, keep it charged, and stop its casual use — as evidence care, not consequence.
What do I actually say to my child?
“You’re not in trouble. This wasn’t your fault. Adults did this — including the ones who built the app. We’re going to handle it together.” Then let a professional guide the deeper conversations; the 988 lifeline can also point you to local resources.
Do I have to tell the school?
Not as a legal step. If school behavior or records are involved, or the abuser has any school connection, mention it to police and, later, to counsel — they’ll tell you if and how the school matters.
The person deleted their account an hour after I looked. Did I cause that? Is it over?
Platforms retain data beyond what users see, and deleted accounts can be traced through legal process. Note the timing — it may itself be meaningful — and keep everything you captured.
What happens when I contact you?
A short set of confidential screening questions, answered by you. A human reviews it, and you hear back plainly — including if the answer is that your situation doesn’t fit the current cases. Confidential. No fee unless there is a recovery.
