The state and national figures across our Roblox litigation pages come from five public datasets, each pulled from its official source, dated, and refreshed on a schedule. We publish this methodology because readers — and the answer engines that quote pages like these — should be able to check every number. Where a dataset has limits, we state them rather than smooth them over.

Statutes of limitation (the deadlines sections)

Every statement of state law on these pages was verified against the official statutory text — the state legislature’s own published code or the enrolled act — with the operative language quoted verbatim, a pinpoint citation, and a direct link to the official source, most recently on August 16, 2026. Where recent amendments have not yet reached a state’s codified pages (Rhode Island’s 2026 act, for example), we cite the enrolled bill and say so. For a small number of states whose official sources could not be verified at the last pass, we publish no specific periods at all rather than rely on secondary summaries — several widely used secondary trackers carry figures that do not match the official texts. Deadlines for claims against the platforms themselves are a contested legal question everywhere; no page on this site states that any particular deadline applies to any particular claim.

MDL 3166 filings by state

Counts of cases transferred into MDL 3166 from each state’s federal courts are compiled from the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation’s transfer orders and the MDL docket (via the federal courts’ public records, accessed through CourtListener/RECAP), reconciled order-by-order through the most recent conditional transfer order. Limit: most member cases are filed directly in the Northern District of California regardless of the family’s home state and are not counted by state in any public record — so transferred-case counts understate, often substantially, the number of families from a given state. We refresh this dataset monthly and on major docket events.

FBI IC3 crimes-against-children complaints

Per-state figures come from the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center’s 2025 annual state reports (ic3.gov), read state page by state page. The crimes-against-children figure is IC3’s victim count for complaints carrying that designation; IC3 treats the designation as a tracking descriptor across crime types. Limit: IC3 complaints are self-reported to the FBI and are not verified incidents. Refreshed annually when IC3 publishes.

NCMEC CyberTipline data

Figures come from NCMEC‘s own 2025 publications, read directly from the published PDFs on August 16, 2026: 21,351,493 total reports (1,413,347 online enticement, up 158%); the per-state resolution table (~1.9 million reports resolving to a U.S. state), which feeds each state page; and the Reports-by-ESP table, including Roblox’s 65,381 reports in 2025 (24,522 in 2024, per Roblox’s own disclosure). Limits, stated plainly: CyberTipline reports are reports, not verified incidents; report volume reflects a platform’s detection and reporting practices as much as underlying conduct, and should not be read as a safety ranking in either direction; and only a minority of reports resolve to a specific U.S. state, so state-level report counts, where we publish them, cover a subset of volume and are not incidence rates. Refreshed annually.

Child population

State child-population figures are U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey estimates (2024 one-year estimates, table B09001). Vintage note: Census estimates (2024) and NCMEC/IC3 reporting years (2025) differ; we do not compute per-capita rates across mismatched vintages.

State enforcement actions

Statements about state attorney general lawsuits, settlements, and investigations are compiled from the attorneys general’s own press releases, court records, and named local news outlets — never from aggregator legal-news sites, several of which carried materially wrong dates during our verification passes. Settlement amounts, where we report them, appear only on our news pages, attributed to the announcing office. Refreshed as events occur via our docket-monitoring pipeline.
