The makers — not the salons — are the named defendants.

The companies that made and sold chemical relaxers are defending the federal litigation. One question tells you where you stand.

Active litigation — no settlement. MDL 3060 underway · 12,381 cases pending · filing deadlines vary by state and run from when you knew or should have known.

Did you get relaxers — perms, the white cream — every few weeks, for years?

That one question decides most of it. It seems like nobody ever told you the risk was anything worse than a scalp burn.

Claims are brought against the companies that made and sold chemical relaxers — not against your stylist, your salon, or the person who did your hair growing up. Conversations are confidential. Some matters may be referred to or handled with other law firms. No settlement has been announced and no trial has been held; every case depends on its own facts. The hair relaxer MDL names two groups of manufacturers. First-wave defendants include L’Oréal USA, SoftSheen-Carson, Strength of Nature, Godrej, Namaste Laboratories, House of Cheatham and Revlon. A later Second Wave group includes Wella, John Paul Mitchell Systems, Bronner Bros., Dudley Beauty, Advanced Beauty and Murray’s.

One question decides most of it.

Did you get relaxers — perms, the white cream — at least four times a year for two years or more? Roughly is fine.

Lawsuits consolidated in federal court in Chicago (MDL 3060) allege that long-term use of chemical hair relaxers is associated with uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, and related conditions. As of October 2026 the cases are in pretrial proceedings; no trial has been held and no settlement has been announced. The allegations have not been proven, and each case depends on its own facts.

Who is being sued in the hair relaxer litigation

Most pages about the chemical hair relaxer lawsuits name three or four famous companies and stop. The real roster is longer, and it matters: products used over twenty years usually trace to several manufacturers.

A dash means no brand is established for that manufacturer in the source record.

One name that does not belong on any relaxer roster: Cantu. Its owner sells no chemical relaxer or straightening cream. Pages listing it among relaxer brands are wrong.

What “Second Wave” means

The MDL was not filed against every relaxer maker at once. A first group was consolidated from February 2023. A later group — the Second Wave defendants — was added afterward and managed on a separate track (Dkt. 1911).

Three moved to dismiss and lost on February 19, 2025: Wella, Advanced Beauty and John Paul Mitchell Systems (Dkts. 1096–1098). Discovery against them was stayed from December 2025. On July 24, 2026, Judge Mary M. Rowland ended that pause (Dkt. 1984): “The Court always encourages FRE 408 discussions. But this matter has been stayed since December 2025. … It is time to litigate. The stay on discovery as to Second Wave Defendants is lifted.” That discovery is supervised by Magistrate Judge Beth W. Jantz.

The newer defendants are in active discovery, not on hold. The litigation widened in 2026.

The Revlon bankruptcy, and why its deadlines were different

Revlon filed for Chapter 11 on June 15, 2022, before the MDL existed (Bankr. S.D.N.Y. No. 22-10760 (DSJ)). Bankruptcy sets its own clock, and it has already run out for many claims.

The proof-of-claim bar date was April 11, 2023. Revlon’s plan, effective May 2, 2023, required claimants to sue in the MDL by September 14, 2023, or, for a uterine or ovarian cancer diagnosed after April 11, 2023, within six months of that diagnosis (Dkt. 946 at 3). Those dates drove the September 2023 filing surge and the court’s later dismissal line.

If Revlon products are part of your history, those dates are separate from the MDL deadlines. They run on the bankruptcy’s clock rather than on any state’s, which is why a review checks them first.

The rulings that shaped the current roster

  • Nov. 13, 2023 (Dkt. 291): joint motion to dismiss granted in part; Dabur International Ltd. and Dermoviva Skin Essentials dismissed on personal jurisdiction. Namaste Laboratories, LLC stayed in.
  • Sept. 27, 2024 (Dkt. 852): a second round of dismissals narrowed particular counts by state, removing no manufacturer.
  • Nov. 13, 2024 (Dkt. 946): uterine, ovarian and endometrial cancer identified as the core claims, with a six-month refile window from a later diagnosis. Fibroids and endometriosis survive only as standalone claims.
  • May 5, 2026 (Dkt. 1828): Godrej SON and Strength of Nature filed the defendants’ combined motion to exclude the plaintiffs’ general-causation experts. Briefed June 16, 2026; undecided (Dkt. 1881).

Brand pages

Why the defendant list matters to your own file

Naming the right manufacturer is identification work, and one of the first things a review does. Most women used several brands over twenty or thirty years, which usually means several defendants. Nobody arrives with that list. And the claim runs against those companies — not against a salon, a stylist, or whoever first bought the box.

Study findings and adverse-event reports describe associations; they are not verified causation.

This page is legal information, not medical advice, and it does not diagnose anything. Questions about your health belong with your own doctor.

Do you meet the screen?

  • Used a chemical hair relaxer at least four times a year for at least two years. Every brand counts.
  • A diagnosis of uterine, ovarian, or endometrial cancer — the core injuries the trial track runs on (Dkt. 946; Dkt. 1944).
  • Records establishing diagnosis and timeline.
  • Whether you qualify is decided on your own facts, not by a webpage.

Fibroids and endometriosis claims sit outside the current federal trial track. That is the shape of the litigation, not a verdict on anyone’s case: they have not been dismissed as a category, and they are worked up and evaluated separately.

Whichever of those describes you, the rest is a conversation. Two minutes to start, and no homework — no receipts, no box, no brand list, no doctor’s letter. Deadlines are set state by state and generally run from when you knew or should have known; that is a fact to check, not a reason to hurry. You get an answer either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many companies are defendants in MDL 3060?

More than a dozen corporate families across the two waves, several through multiple related entities. The roster above lists those named in the docket.

Is this a class action?

No. These are consolidated individual lawsuits (an MDL). Pretrial work is coordinated before one judge; each case keeps its own facts and its own outcome.

I do not know which company made the relaxers I used.

Expected. Brands change hands, and boxes are remembered by look and smell.

Does a Second Wave defendant matter less than an original defendant?

No. They moved to dismiss and lost in February 2025, and the stay on their discovery was lifted in July 2026. They are being litigated.

Can I still bring a claim involving Revlon products?

Those deadlines are strict and largely past, but a diagnosis timeline can change the analysis. That is a question for a case-specific review.

Is there a hair relaxer settlement yet?

No hair relaxer settlement has been announced and no one has been paid. Any page that quotes a dollar figure is estimating. What decides a claim is the diagnosis, the use history and the state’s law — not a range on a webpage. It is a free, confidential consultation, and there is no fee unless there is a recovery. Some matters may be referred to or handled with other law firms. The attorney’s fee is a percentage of the gross recovery, calculated before case expenses are deducted.
